Obsidian Web Clipper alternatives for webpage to Markdown

The official clipper still wins for a vault note. Look further for webpage to Markdown, an automatic TOC, or ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini.

TL;DR

Pick by the job. Obsidian Web Clipper wins for a vault: highlights, templates, and about 1 million Chrome users as of late 2026. WebInk is for clean Markdown, an automatic TOC, a free URL tool, and one-click ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini. Web2MD fits site adapters. BulkMD fits a ZIP. Keep the clipper if you use Obsidian.

Context

Why look beyond Obsidian Web Clipper

  1. 1.

The next stop is a chat

The clipper writes Markdown into a vault. Interpreter runs a model you configure inside the note. It does not open ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini. Add a handoff for chats, and keep the clipper for notes you reread.

  2. 2.

You want a table of contents in the file

October 2026 help covers highlights, a reader view, templates, variables, and Interpreter. An automatic TOC was not observed. Long docs are easier to brief when the file already has one.

  3. 3.

You do not keep an Obsidian vault

It needs Obsidian and a vault folder. With no vault, there is nowhere to write. Copying Markdown or sending it to a chat does not require one.

  4. 4.

You want to test a public URL first

It is an extension for Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge. A no-install public URL page was not observed on obsidian.md/clipper in October 2026.

  5. 5.

Some pages are context, not a note

A logged-in doc is often chat context. The clipper can still file highlights. Another extension can send that tab to ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini.

Checklist

What to look for in a replacement

Destination
A vault note, a chat prompt, and a ZIP are three products. Name the destination before you add another Chrome extension.
Public link or logged-in tab
An extension reads the open tab, including a login. A URL tool only fetches a public page. Do not paste secrets into a public converter.
A generated table of contents
Headings inside the article are not a TOC. You want a generated list that is still in the Markdown you send to ChatGPT or Claude.
Article or hard site
Blogs survive a readability pass. Reddit and YouTube often do not. Web2MD publishes site adapters. WebInk uses a general pass.

In detail

The alternatives, reviewed

1.WebInk

Best for: Clean Markdown, TOC, and AI send

WebInk is a Chrome extension plus a public webpage-to-Markdown tool. It converts the open tab, including logged-in pages, and keeps headings, tables, code, and links. It builds an automatic TOC you can limit by level, and sends that Markdown to ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini. The free URL tool converts a public link with no install and can open ChatGPT. TOC, Claude, and Gemini are extension-only. Image ZIP and Notion are on the paid plan. It does not save into an Obsidian vault or ZIP many URLs.

Strengths

  • Auto TOC in the extension and the file
  • Send to ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini

Limitations

  • No native Obsidian vault save
  • Chrome only. No multi-URL ZIP

Who should use it: You convert one page, want a TOC, and send it to ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini.

Who should not: The note must live in an Obsidian vault.

2.Obsidian Web Clipper

Best for: Vault notes and highlights

Obsidian Web Clipper, at obsidian.md/clipper, is the official free and open-source extension. It highlights text, applies a template, and writes Markdown into a vault folder with properties. Variables cover title, author, date, selection, and highlights. Interpreter runs a model you configure inside the note. That is not a ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini button. The Chrome Web Store lists about 1 million users as of late 2026. Version 1.7.1 shipped in July 2026, and it also runs on Firefox, Safari, and Edge. An automatic TOC and a public URL tool were not observed. Choose it when the note must live in Obsidian.

Strengths

  • Writes into an Obsidian vault
  • Highlights, templates, and properties

Limitations

  • Needs Obsidian and a vault
  • No ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini handoff

Who should use it: You use Obsidian and want the page filed with highlights.

Who should not: You have no vault, or you mainly send pages to ChatGPT or Claude.

3.Web2MD

Best for: Site adapters and AI handoff

Web2MD is a Chrome extension for AI workflows. In October 2026 its listing described send to ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, plus site adapters for pages such as Reddit, YouTube, and GitHub. Public plans described a free web converter capped at 3 a day, and Pro API and MCP access. Adapter counts disagree, so check web2md.org before you rely on a number or a price. An automatic TOC was not observed.

Strengths

  • Markets ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini send
  • Publishes site adapters for harder pages

Limitations

  • Free web convert capped at 3/day
  • Auto TOC not observed (Oct 2026)

Who should use it: A hard site you already saw Web2MD extract, then a send to an AI chat.

Who should not: You need a confirmed TOC, an uncapped public URL tool, or the official vault clipper.

4.BulkMD

Best for: A URL list as one ZIP

BulkMD is a Chrome extension for batch conversion. The October 2026 store listing describes a URL list, background tabs, and a ZIP of Markdown or text, with article or full-page mode and concurrency controls. It converts the open tab and calls the result context for ChatGPT or Claude. Opening those chats was not listed. An automatic TOC and a public URL page were not listed. Choose it for an archive of many URLs.

Strengths

  • URL list to a Markdown or text ZIP
  • Article or full page, with queue controls

Limitations

  • Chat open not observed (Oct 2026)
  • Auto TOC not observed

Who should use it: You have many public URLs and want one archive.

Who should not: You are outlining one page for ChatGPT, or filing Obsidian highlights.

5.MarkDownload

Best for: Salvaging an old template

MarkDownload, by deathau, downloaded Markdown from the open page, with templates and an Obsidian hook. The last tag is 3.4.0 on 23 August 2024. As of October 2026 it is off the Chrome Web Store and unmaintained. It is history, not a current alternative. Use a leftover copy only to salvage a template.

Strengths

  • Open source, still readable
  • Filename and frontmatter templates

Limitations

  • Gone from the Chrome Web Store
  • No tag after 3.4.0 (Aug 2024)

Who should use it: You already run a copy and need one old template.

Who should not: You are choosing a clipper, a chat handoff, or a vault save in 2026.

Straight answer

Who should choose WebInk — and who should not

Good fit for WebInk

  • One page, with headings, tables, and code kept.
  • An automatic TOC in the extension and in the file.
  • One-click send to ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini.
  • A free URL tool for public links, and the extension when you are signed in.

Choose something else when

  • Obsidian Web Clipper: The note must land in a vault with highlights and templates.
  • Web2MD: You need a site adapter, or their Pro API and MCP.
  • BulkMD: You want one ZIP from a list of URLs.
  • Clipper and WebInk together: Vault notes stay in Obsidian. TOC and chats go through WebInk.
  • An old MarkDownload copy: You only need to read a saved template.

Switching

Migration checklist

  1. 01Keep Obsidian Web Clipper if a note still belongs in a vault.
  2. 02File one test note. Confirm the folder, template, and highlights.
  3. 03Public page: paste the URL into WebInk. Logged-in page: convert the open tab.
  4. 04On a long doc, turn the automatic TOC on. The URL tool does not add it.
  5. 05Send it to ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini. Hard site: try Web2MD. Many URLs: use BulkMD.
  6. 06Remove the clipper only if a week of pages never needs the vault copy.
