MarkDownload alternatives for webpage to Markdown

MarkDownload left the Chrome Web Store. The last official tag is August 2024. Choose a vault, a chat, or a ZIP.

Last updated 8 min readBy the WebInk team

TL;DR

Pick a MarkDownload alternative by the job. Obsidian Web Clipper wins for a vault. Try Web2MD for site extractors, and BulkMD when URLs should become one ZIP. Try WebInk for clean Markdown, an automatic TOC, a free URL tool, and one-click send to ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini.

Disclosure: WebInk is our product. Other tools win some jobs below. Facts are from their public pages in October 2026, or marked not observed.

Context

Why people leave MarkDownload

  1. 1.

    Chrome cannot install it anymore

As of October 2026 it is off the Chrome Web Store, per Chrome's best-practices notice. New people cannot install it.

  2. 2.

The last tag is August 2024

Tag 3.4.0 on github.com/deathau/markdownload is dated 23 August 2024. Manifest V3 pull requests are not a store build.

  3. 3.

It saved a file, and stopped there

The guide covers download and templates, not an automatic TOC or a send to ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini.

  4. 4.

Open reports have nowhere to land

Issue 399 (June 2026) reports span tags left in code. No newer tag ships a fix.

Checklist

What to look for in a replacement

Destination
A vault note, a chat prompt, and a ZIP are three products. Name the destination first.
Public link or logged-in tab
The extension reads the open tab, including a login. A URL tool only fetches a public page.
A generated table of contents
Headings are not a TOC. You want a generated list that still shows up in the exported file.
Article or hard site
Blogs survive a readability pass. Reddit and YouTube often do not. Web2MD publishes extractors. WebInk uses a general pass.

In detail

The alternatives, reviewed

1.WebInk

Best for: Clean Markdown, TOC, and AI send

WebInk is a Chrome extension and a public webpage-to-Markdown tool. The extension converts the open tab, including pages you are logged into, and keeps headings, tables, code, and links. It builds an automatic table of contents you can limit by level and drop in with a template. The same panel sends that Markdown to ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini. The free URL tool converts a public link with no install and can open ChatGPT. TOC, Claude, and Gemini live only in the extension. Image ZIP and Notion export are on the paid plan. It does not write a native Obsidian note or ZIP a list of URLs.

Strengths

  • Auto TOC in the extension and the file
  • Send to ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini

Limitations

  • No native Obsidian save
  • No multi-URL ZIP

Who should use it: You convert one page, want a TOC, and send it to ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini.

Who should not: You only need a vault, a URL-list ZIP, or a hard-site extractor.

2.Obsidian Web Clipper

Best for: Vault notes and highlights

Obsidian Web Clipper is the official extension at obsidian.md/clipper. It highlights text, applies a template, and writes Markdown into a vault folder with properties you set. Site rules pick the template. Variables cover title, author, date, selection, and schema.org fields. That vault save is the job MarkDownload only approximated. Obsidian calls it free and open source. Choose it when the note must live in Obsidian. Skip it if you have no vault, or if the next step is ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini. An automatic TOC was not on the pages we checked in October 2026. Interpreter runs a model you configure. That is not those three chat buttons.

Strengths

  • Writes into an Obsidian vault
  • Templates, properties, and highlights

Limitations

  • Needs a vault
  • No ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini handoff

Who should use it: You use Obsidian and want the note filed with highlights.

Who should not: You have no vault, or you mainly send pages to ChatGPT or Claude.

3.Web2MD

Best for: Hard-site extractors and AI handoff

Web2MD is a Chrome extension aimed at AI workflows. In October 2026 its store listing and homepage described conversion, send to ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, prompts, batch runs, token estimates, and extractors for hard sites such as Reddit, YouTube, and GitHub. Those pages do not agree on the extractor count. Different URLs say 5, 14, 16, or 20 or more, and one post mentions a daily cap and a paid plan. Check web2md.org before you rely on a number or a price. A hosted paste-a-URL form was not observed. A CLI was. An automatic TOC was not observed. Try it when the extractor matches your site. Do not assume a TOC.

Strengths

  • Markets ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini send
  • Publishes hard-site extractors

Limitations

  • Published counts and plan limits disagree
  • Auto TOC not observed (Oct 2026)

Who should use it: A hard site you already saw Web2MD extract cleanly, then an AI chat.

Who should not: You need a confirmed TOC, a no-install URL form, or a native vault save.

4.BulkMD

Best for: A URL list as one ZIP

BulkMD is a Chrome extension for batch conversion. Its Chrome Web Store listing, checked in October 2026, describes a URL list, background tabs, and a ZIP of Markdown or text, with an article or full-page mode and concurrency controls. It also converts the open tab and calls the result context for ChatGPT or Claude. Opening ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini was not in that listing. An automatic TOC was not listed. A public no-install URL page was not listed. Ratings and prices are omitted here. Choose BulkMD when you want an archive from many URLs, not one outlined article.

Strengths

  • URL list to a Markdown or text ZIP
  • Article or full page, with queue controls

Limitations

  • Chat open not observed (Oct 2026)
  • Auto TOC not observed

Who should use it: You have many public URLs and want one archive.

Who should not: You are outlining one logged-in page for ChatGPT, or filing Obsidian highlights.

5.MarkDownload

Best for: Salvaging an old template

MarkDownload, by deathau, is the open-source clipper people still mean by a MarkDownload alternative. It converted the open page with Readability and Turndown, showed a popup, and downloaded Markdown, with title templates, frontmatter, and an Obsidian hook. The last tag is 3.4.0 on 23 August 2024. As of October 2026 it is off the Chrome Web Store and treated as unmaintained. Manifest V3 pull requests exist. They are not a store install. Other stores were not re-checked. Use a leftover copy only to salvage a template.

Strengths

  • Open source, still readable
  • Filename and frontmatter templates

Limitations

  • Gone from the Chrome Web Store
  • No tag after 3.4.0 (Aug 2024)

Who should use it: You already run a copy and need one old template.

Who should not: You are installing a clipper for the first time.

Straight answer

Who should choose WebInk — and who should not

Good fit for WebInk

  • One page, with headings, tables, and code kept.
  • An automatic TOC in the extension and in the file.
  • Send to ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini.
  • A free URL tool for public links, and the extension when signed in.

Choose something else when

  • Obsidian Web Clipper: The note must land in a vault with highlights.
  • Web2MD: You need a hard-site extractor or their CLI. Confirm it on web2md.org.
  • BulkMD: You want one ZIP from a URL list.
  • An old MarkDownload copy: You only need to read a saved template.

Switching

Migration checklist

  1. 01Save files already downloaded, and copy any MarkDownload template before removing it.
  2. 02Vault: install Obsidian Web Clipper and file one test note.
  3. 03Public page: paste a URL into WebInk's tool. Logged-in page: convert the open tab in the extension.
  4. 04Long docs: turn TOC on in the extension. The URL tool does not add it.
  5. 05Many URLs: use BulkMD's ZIP. Hard sites: compare one URL in Web2MD.
  6. 06Remove MarkDownload after two real pages look right.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Match the MarkDownload alternative to the job. Install Obsidian Web Clipper when the note must open in a vault with a folder, properties, and highlights. Install WebInk when you want webpage-to-Markdown output, an automatic table of contents, a free URL tool for public pages, and a Chrome extension that sends the result to ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini. Try Web2MD when a generic extract fails on a site they publish an extractor for, such as Reddit or YouTube, and confirm that list on their site. Use BulkMD for many URLs in one ZIP. Test one hard page before you switch habits.

More from WebInk

Try one public page, then decide.

Paste a public URL into the WebInk tool. Use the extension for TOC, Claude, Gemini, or a logged-in tab. For a vault, a hard site, or a ZIP, use the other tool.
